Volunteer center offers holiday aid brochure

The Roger Hill Volunteer Center has published its annual “How to Help at the Holidays” brochure to provide information on how volunteers may assist charitable organizations. It includes adopt-a-family and adopt-a-child holiday programs and how to volunteer or contribute to free holiday meals. The brochure is available by calling the center or by going online at www.rhvc.org.

Immediate volunteer needs

¢ The Kansas University Children’s Holiday Party will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Volunteers are needed from noon to 6 p.m. to assist with activities such as cookie decorating, crafts, storytelling and games. E-mail milk@ku.edu for more information or to volunteer.

¢ Independence Inc. needs volunteers to rake leaves on behalf of an individual with disabilities. A small group of two to four volunteers could complete the task in about two hours. Interested volunteers may contact Angie Reinking, independent living counselor, at 841-0333, ext. 204.

¢ The Lawrence Arts Center needs volunteers for its Children’s Holiday Shop from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. To volunteer, contact Noelle Uhler at the arts center, 843-2787 or lacdev@sunflower.com.

¢ Douglas County Senior Services is selling Jingle Jars this holiday season to benefit the Adult Day Program. Jars are filled with ingredients to make baked goods, soups and drinks; prices are $3 for a half-pint, $5 for a pint and $10 for a quart. For more information, contact DCSS at 842-0543.

¢ KVC Behavioral Health Care will have a holiday party for children served by the agency on Dec. 15. Volunteers are needed to decorate for the party and photograph children with Santa Claus. Stocking stuffers or small gifts also are needed. Contact Lydia Diebolt at 331-4200, ext. 6620.

¢ The Salvation Army seeks volunteers to assist with a variety of holiday programs. Volunteers are needed to accept and process applications for holiday assistance programs, sort and prepare gifts for the Toys for Tots holiday toy shop, and ring bells at local businesses. Individuals as well as civic or business groups are needed to support these programs.

¢ The Lawrence Community Shelter Holiday Gift Program needs donations of items such as AA batteries, strollers, newborn clothing, diapers, camping gear, deodorant, razors, shampoo, shaving cream, socks, gloves, knit hats, blankets and coats.
