Joint committee aims to resolve rural planning differences

City, county have been slow to agree on new regulations

A committee of Douglas County, Lawrence city and planning commissioners will meet sometime soon to discuss issues of concern about proposed rural development and subdivision planning regulations.

“I think we can make the process work and I think we can reach a reasonable conclusion,” Lawrence Mayor Mike Amyx said during a meeting Monday with county commissioners.

Amyx and County Commissioner Charles Jones agreed to be on the committee. Others who will be asked if they can serve on the committee are City Commissioner Boog Highberger and planning Commissioners Grant Eichorn and Lisa Harris, Amyx and Jones said.

City and county commissioners have been at odds over the rural development regulations, failing to come to agreement on the issue.

But county commissioners also expressed optimism Monday that the issues can be worked out. It they cannot, county commissioners would adopt their set of rural regulations for outside the city limits.

Commissioners also said they did not intend to dissolve the planning partnership the city and county have had for several years, including working through the joint city-county planning commission.
