Gardner ? The Free State High wrestling team opened its season with a ninth-place finish at Saturday’s Gardner-Edgerton Invitational.

The Firebirds scored 84.5 team points. Baldwin won the team title with 206.5 points. Ottawa took fifth with 146.

Marc Somers turned in the top individual performance for the Firebirds, finishing second at 140 pounds. Other Free State placers included Alex Hardman (125, third), Kenny Flanders (130, sixth), Jack Caywood (135, fifth) and Andy Neighbors (189, fifth).

Baldwin’s Alan Callahan (112) and Kevin Callahan (130) were the lone area winners.
