All-freshman lineup unlikely today

Henrickson regrets playing quintet of rookies in crucial moments of Wednesday's victory

? Bonnie Henrickson has relied heavily on freshmen, but the Kansas University women’s basketball coach conceded she went a little too far the other night.

Henrickson had five freshmen on the floor during the last two minutes of the Jayhawks’ 75-63 victory over Western Illinois in Allen Fieldhouse.

“I looked up,” Henrickson said afterward, “and wondered, ‘What was I thinking?'”

Henrickson isn’t likely ever to have five rookies on the floor at the same time today when the Jayhawks tangle with a potent Wisconsin team.

Tipoff will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Kohl Center. There will be no telecast, but the game will be broadcast on the Jayhawk Network, including 1320 KLWN.

While Henrickson may not put an all-freshman lineup on the floor today, chances are she’ll have four out there at one time or another. That’s because four of her top five scorers are first-year collegians – Danielle McCray (8.8 points per game), Kelly Kohn (8.0), Sade Morris (7.6) and LaChelda Jacobs (6.2).

Marija Zinic, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, is the Jayhawks’ leading scorer and the only KU player averaging in double figures (10.8).

Wednesday’s victory over Western Illinois was typical of Henrickson’s commitment to go deep into her bench. She used a dozen players against the Westerwinds.

Ten of them scored, and 11 had at least one rebound.

This year’s KU edition – Henrickson’s third – bears little resemblance to last year’s senior-dominated squad. In last December’s stirring 90-87 double-overtime victory over Wisconsin in Allen Fieldhouse, the Jayhawks were led by seniors Crystal Kemp, Erica Hallman and Kaylee Brown with 28, 24 and 17 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Badgers have just about everyone back, including high-scoring guard Jolene Anderson, who hit the Jayhawks for 26 points in the last meeting.

Wisconsin (7-1) tuned up for today’s game by crushing Southern Miss, 88-37, Friday night as Anderson scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

“The level of competition is going to ante up,” Henrickson said. “Wisconsin is one of the best rebounding teams in the country. They had 14 offensive rebounds in the first half last year.”

Kansas has been able to win four of its first five games despite being outrebounded slightly. The Jayhawks have neutralized that weakness by forcing an average of 22 turnovers a game.

KU will be back in Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday night to meet South Dakota State.
