H&R Block, Intuit settle TV ad lawsuit

H&R Block Inc. and Intuit Inc. have settled litigation over television ads for each other’s tax-preparation software.

The nature of the settlement, announced earlier this week in papers filed with the federal court in Kansas City, Mo., is not being disclosed.

“We’ve resolved the dispute to our satisfaction but all of the terms are confidential,” said Nick Iammartino, an H&R Block spokesman.

A spokesman for Mountain View, Calif.-based Intuit didn’t immediately return a phone call for comment.

H&R Block in January sued Intuit, maker of TurboTax software, claiming the company’s television ads saying it prepared more tax returns in 2005 than “at all the H&R Block stores combined” were false.

Intuit changed its marketing but later countersued, claiming H&R Block had publicly released fraudulent tax return figures on which it relied in developing its ads. It also claimed H&R Block had copied elements of Intuit’s Turbo Tax ads in marketing its own TaxCut software.

H&R Block denied the claims.
