Coat giveaway helps spread the warmth to 200 families

Jeremiah Hasemeier, 6, Lawrence, takes a look through the large hood of his new coat. He and his sisters selected coats with their grandmother Friday during the Scotch Share the Warmth coat giveaway. Behind Jeremiah are his sisters, from left, Glorian Joy Watson, 3, and Sarah Ross, 5.

About 60 people were waiting at the door Friday morning when the annual Scotch Share the Warmth coat giveaway began.

“Some of them had been waiting for an hour,” said Diane Zinn, head of The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.

The Salvation Army, in conjunction with Scotch Industries, conducted the coat giveaway in the vacant Scotch Cleaners building at 1040 Vt. The coats – more than 2,000 of them – were given to anyone who needed one.

“There are no restrictions and no questions asked,” said Sue Dalberg, co-administrator of The Salvation Army.

By the time operation closed at 4 p.m., more than 200 families as well as additional individuals had browsed the coat racks and made their selections, Dalberg said. Some of the families had six, eight and 10 members, she said.

The coat giveaway will continue from 9 a.m. to noon today.

For the giveaway – now in its 20th year – coats are collected from donors in the fall by Scotch, which then cleans them and readies them for display.

The coats were available in a variety of sizes and styles for men, women and children. Among those hanging from racks and piled on tables Friday were blue Kansas University coats with Jayhawks and even a 1970s yellow “Charlie’s Angels” sweatshirt.
