Weekend’s rainfall soaks Lawrence area

The Lawrence area received 5.35 inches of rain between Friday morning and Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said.

The majority of that total – 3.65 inches – fell during downpours Sunday morning and afternoon, the service said.

The heavy rains forced the service to issue a flash flood watch for the area through this morning.

The service said Lawrence was the middle ground for much of the weekend’s rainfall, with northern counties receiving more rain and many areas to the south remaining fairly dry.

There are chances for more rain during the week. For more on the weather, see page 8B.

The weather also affected drivers, especially in the early-morning hours Sunday. Douglas County dispatchers said there had been 21 noninjury accidents since 1:30 a.m. Sunday, including several around 2 a.m.

Medical crews also responded to three injury accidents in the area – two on Interstate 70 and one minor injury wreck at 19th and Rhode Island streets.
