County to proclaim National Payroll Week

Workers earn their paychecks, and the workers who make sure that workers get their paychecks will be up for some special recognition today at the Douglas County Courthouse.

County commissioners this morning are scheduled to proclaim next week as National Payroll Week, honoring payroll professionals and the employees who rely on them for their regular compensation.

The event is sponsored by the 22,000-member American Payroll Assn. to pay tribute to the more than 156 million U.S. workers, including the payroll clerks and others who pay wages, report employee earnings and withhold employment taxes.

Payroll departments also are regarded as partners in supporting Social Security and Medicare systems, and are taking a more active role in the enforcement of child-support laws by deducting child-support payments from workers’ paychecks, said Julie Jacob, an account clerk for Douglas County government and organizer of the local proclamation on behalf of the association.

The presentation is set for 8:30 a.m. at the courthouse, 1100 Mass.
