Suspect pleads no contest to sex crime
Prosecutors will not oppose continued probation for a Lawrence man who entered a plea Tuesday to his second criminal case involving allegations he inappropriately touched young children at a local apartment complex.
John T. Whitehead, 31, pleaded no contest Tuesday to aggravated indecent liberties with a child and admitted the state had enough evidence to show he inappropriately touched a kindergarten-age boy through his clothing between December 2004 and May 2005.
The case happened about the same time as another case in which Whitehead has been convicted of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child.
Whitehead is developmentally delayed and has a history of mental health troubles, authorities said.
He admitted to police that he played and roughhoused with neighborhood children at Westgate Apartments – sometimes as parents stood by – to sexually arouse himself.
State sentencing guidelines call for him to serve prison time, but Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office is not opposing probation as part of a plea agreement. He will be sentenced Oct. 2.
