LHS and Free State fall sports jamborees set for tonight

Events showcase athletes, coaches, cheerleaders and bands

Want to get a look at the size of the line of the Lawrence High School varsity football team?

Interested in who the top scorers will be for the Free State varsity volleyball team?

Or maybe you just want to see the cheerleaders and mascots and hear the marching bands play for the city’s two public high schools.

You can do so starting at 6 tonight at the annual Fall Sports/Activities Jamborees sponsored by each of the schools.

“It’s a fall sports activities and showcase kind of thing,” said Julie Boyle, communications director for Lawrence Public Schools.

LHS

The LHS event begins at 6 p.m. at Haskell Stadium. Admission is $1, but students get in with their school activity card.

Here is the introduction schedule for LHS:

¢ 6 p.m. – “C” Soccer and coach Bill Kelly.

¢ 6:10 p.m. – Girls’ Golf and coach Mike Lewis

¢ 6:20 p.m. – JV and Varsity Soccer and coaches David Platt and Christian Sayre.

¢ 6:50 p.m. – Sophomore Football and coaches John Nelson, Jack Hood, Devin McAnderson and Jeff Melcher.

¢ 7 p.m. – Girls’ Gymnastics and coaches Kathy Johnson, Sindra Schueler and Allison Wright.

¢ 7:15 p.m. – LHS Band and directors Mike Jones and Pat McCarty.

¢ 7:30 p.m. – JV and Varsity Football and coaches Dirk Wedd, Adam Green, Jason Lichte, Jeremy Milner, John Reed and Chuck Holley.

¢ 7:40 p.m. – Cheerleaders and coaches Junior Wedd, Shayla Jacob and Maya Tillman.

¢ 7:50 p.m. – Girls’ Tennis and coaches Steve Hudson and Mike Gillam.

¢ 8 p.m. – Cross Country and coaches Brian Anderson, Kent McDonald and Kelly Ballard.

¢ 8:20 p.m. – Pom Squad and coach Ashley Stewart.

¢ 8:30 p.m. – Volleyball and coaches Molly LaMere, John Moos, Jenny Ziskal and Christie Leuty.

¢ 8:40 p.m. – Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine, Lance Mullen, principal Steve Nilhas and administrators Matt Brungardt, Jan Gentry, Beryl New and Supt. Randy Weseman.

Free State

Gates open for the Free State event at 5:30 p.m. at the school’s “stadium,” which is the field west of the school. There is no admission charge.

The following is the Free State schedule:

¢ 6 p.m. – Sophomore football scrimmage, 20 minute running clock

¢ 6:20 p.m.- Cross Country mile run.

¢ 6:30 p.m. – Varsity/JV Football Scrimmage (1st half) 25 minutes.

¢ 6:35 p.m. – Introduce Girls’ Tennis

¢ 6:40 p.m. – Introduce Gymnastics

¢ 6:45 p.m. – Introduce Volleyball

¢ 6:50 p.m. – Introduce Girls Golf

¢ 6:55 p.m. – End of 1st half of football, Introduce Soccer

¢ 7 p.m. – Marching Band performance

¢ 7:15 p.m. – Varsity/JV Football (2nd half) 25 minutes

¢ 7:25 p.m. – Introduce Cheer and Pom

¢ 7:50 p.m. – Volleyball scrimmage in main gym
