Storm closes Chi Omega sorority for the night

Members of Chi Omega sorority, 1345 W. Campus Road, are recovering from a stormy night.

Lightning struck a power line near the sorority, knocking out power around midnight, sorority president Mallory Hammersmith said.

About 2 a.m., the sorority’s house director woke to smoke coming from the house’s basement, and the house was evevacuated.

“We stood outside until 4 in the morning,” Hammersmith said.

The women later retreated to the Holiday Inn Holidome where they spent the night.

The electricity and air conditioning were restored and the house has reopened for occupants.

Hammersmith said the incident will not affect sorority recruitment, which is going on now. She said there were no injuries and a cause for the smoke has not been determined.
