Members of Chi Omega sorority, 1345 W. Campus Road, are recovering from a stormy night.
Lightning struck a power line near the sorority, knocking out power around midnight, sorority president Mallory Hammersmith said.
About 2 a.m., the sorority's house director woke to smoke coming from the house's basement, and the house was evevacuated.
"We stood outside until 4 in the morning," Hammersmith said.
The women later retreated to the Holiday Inn Holidome where they spent the night.
The electricity and air conditioning were restored and the house has reopened for occupants.
Hammersmith said the incident will not affect sorority recruitment, which is going on now. She said there were no injuries and a cause for the smoke has not been determined.

I wonder if the pledges will have to sing about this.

I can't believe someone hasn't blamed a developer or Wal-Mart on this.

You know, somehow, it always comes back to porn with you TOB. ; ) And then, you mention it and I get porn music stuck in my head all day. Thanks a lot.

Wow. What a great article. Thank you, LJWorld, for qualifying news as a lightning strike.
"The women evacuated the house. Firefighers came. It was dark outside. They stood. I write like a fifth-grader."

The New Chi-O Pledge Song:
Oh my sisters, the thunder breaks;
That one was close, our souls doth shake;
And in the morn, should we have to roam...
We'll just meet Tad and Skip at the Holidome!

"Hammersmith said the incident will not effect sorority recruitment, which is going on now."
Can't help myself here, but note to Sophia Maines and the editor who should be proofing this gripping, sensational and extremely newsworthy drivel, the proper word here is "affect," not "effect." Nitpicky, I know...

Chi Omega... haven't heard that name for a while. I usually associate that name with two other words: "soap" and "fountain". Hey, upperclassmen, don't forget to teach the incoming freshmen men that trick!

Hot sweaty sorority girls spend night at Holidome. Ummm yeah right. This is news how?
Easy_Does_It 6 years, 9 months ago
The headline was a little misleading. I thought maybe some guy called off the engagement and wanted his ring back.

Fabian_zimbabwe~ You are so right! Also, did you notice this gem?
"Lightening struck a power line near the sorority, knocking out power around midnight, sorority president Mallory Hammersmith said."
"Lightening?" The mystery here is what sort of "lightening" they're talking about--candle power or weight? Did the power line suddenly start glowing (as a rope light, perhaps), or did it start levitating and float away into the night?
Incidentally, LJW, the meteorological phenomenon you're looking for is "lightning."

"We stood outside until four in the morning. It was dark. And cold. I like puppies!"
Standing outside for two hours (with more lightning probably) as opposed to going to another house? Hopefully this travesty of a natural phenomenon has been an ENLIGHTENING experience badum-ching!
Tychoman 6 years, 9 months ago
This whole night could come to be known as "The Enlightenment"!!

Bizarre night? Really?
From what I hear lightning strikes all the time.
In fact, my sister's and brother's houses got struck by lightning last week. And that didn't even make the family newsletter.

Damn, those poor young women. They should have called me. I would have been over in a flash to comfort them.

". . .house was evevacuated. "
huh? Does that involved a plunger-like container full of warm water?
Gootsie 6 years, 9 months ago
AND
They will have to rename it the "Thunderdome" won't they? Just watch out for Mel these days...
Pywacket 6 years, 9 months ago
Straightshooter~ Thanks! I missed that one. ;-)
Don't look now, but somebody's fixed "lightning" and "affect," but they decided to stick with "evevacuated."
Hmmm... eve.. vacuated.... Sounds like those girls were maybe listening to a snaky individual who told them to try some forbidden fruit for midnight munchies.
