Car-train collision sends one to hospital

An Edwardsville woman was transported to the hospital this morning after a collision involving an Amtrak train.

The accident occurred at 2:10 this morning when a Dodge Intrepid collided with a train at the tracks on E. 1900 Road.

The 23-year-old driver of the vehicle, whose whose name was not released, was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Lt. Kari Wempe, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokeswoman.

The train, which was carrying 204 passengers and 4 crew members, was stopped for an hour and a half while officials assessed the damage. No one inside the train was injured.

Later this morning, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office identified the car’s driver as Teresa Burch, 23, of Edwardsville.

She was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Hospital officials said late this morning she was treated and released.
