Steamy, triple-digit heat continues

Heat advistory from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today

Another day of triple-digit temperatures is in the works for Lawrence, says Sarah Jones, 6News weather forecaster.

But storm clouds are also moving in, bringing a chance for some wet relief tonight and cooler temperatures Friday, Jones said.

“We do have a slight chance for a shower and thunderstorm,” she said

Lawrence’s temperature will climb to 100 degrees today, she said. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, advising those who have to be outdoors to wear light-weight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, protect themselves from the sun and drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.

Jones said the heat index could rise as high as 105-110 degrees. Lawrence reached 106 on Wednesday, she said. The average high temperature for this date is 90 degrees. The record high was 114 degrees, set in 1934.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 74 degrees, the humidity was 79 percent and winds were out of the east at 3 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 70 degrees. The record low was 53 degrees, set in 1917.

Jones said the cold front will move in in out of the north overnight. The National Weather Service says the chance for showers and thunderstorms is 30 percent.

Jones said the temperature will fall to 72 degrees by early Friday morning. Friday’s high temperature will be 92 degrees, she said.

“We may see a few lingering showers or storms,” she said.

Partly cloudy cloudy skies will continue through Saturday, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 70 degrees, with Saturday’s high temperature climbing to 93 degrees, she said.
