Laws ignored

To the editor:

I echo the sentiments expressed in these pages recently regarding cycling safety and rules of the road in rural parts of the county.

I, too, am not opposed to the rights of cyclists, whether for recreational or competitive purposes. Many are attentive riders, conscientious and respectful of the rules of the road. However, a growing number blatantly disregard traffic laws and pose great danger to themselves and all commuters.

Drivers south of Lawrence and Eudora routinely deal with multiple riders across lanes on hills, ignored traffic signs, and frequent inconsideration of approaching traffic. The attitude clearly demonstrated is one of entitlement, as oppose to one of respect and co-existence.

Most recently, one rider failed to stop eastbound at the intersection of County Roads 458 and 1061 (northbound and southbound do not stop). Had it not been for my anticipation and reaction due to my understanding of the mentality of some cyclists, a very unfortunate incident would have occurred as the rider proceeded straight across the intersection with my oncoming vehicle only feet away. Sadly, the reaction to my braking and honking was a gesture far different than the one of recognition, contrition and gratitude I expected to receive from her and her companions.

Although county commissioners have been briefed in the past of the increasing dangers we are encountering, here’s hoping the drumbeat of concerns continue to rise and be heard in order to enforce better policing of bicyclists in the heavy cycling months of autumn ahead.
