City moves forward on new sewer plant location

Southeast option tapped

The city of Lawrence will begin acquiring land along the Wakarusa River to build a $75 million sewage treatment plant. The project team charged with selecting the plant site has chosen a location east of U.S. Highway 59. The site is east of Haskell Ave. and northeast of Douglas County North 1100 and East 1600 roads. The city also had been considering a location west of Highway 59.

The selection team said the eastern location would be cheaper and is downstream of the Baker Wetlands. Nor will it require the moving of any homes. City officials now are notifying nearby property owners and beginning to buy the land needed for the treatment plant.
