Golf debacle

To the editor:

It is past time to hand the Eagle Bend Golf Course over to private interests. Since it caters only to a particular segment of society, it should become their own bona fide club. It is not warranted for taxpayers to keep subsidizing this losing venture year after year. The multiple-thousands being misplaced on this finance-of-no-return should instead be invested in our youth.

The local skating rink was demolished a few years ago to make way for the Kohl’s/Old Navy stores. Now that the Food-4-Less building is empty, it would make a perfect location to convert into a new skating center. With the great advancements that have been made in flooring over the years, additional activities could be encompassed. Along with the many regular skating activities, roller hockey might be included as well. With some thoughtful planning, the joys could be endless!

This positive change would not only benefit the many youths of Douglas and surrounding counties, but local merchants as well – and the expense would be a fraction of the tax money currently being spent on the golf course debacle.
