Blazing up to 100-plus temperatures today

Heat advistory continues until 7 tonight

If you’re among the many Lawrence residents who are moving into new apartments today, don’t spare the air conditioner.

“It’s another hot day, with the heat index being around 110 degrees,” said Sara Jones, 6News weather forecaster.

Jones said temperatures should reach the 90s by noon and hit 100 degrees by 4 p.m. Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph, she said.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of northeast Kansas, including Lawrence and Douglas County, until 7 tonight.

The heat and humidity will combine to make it feel like 105 to 110 degrees, the weather service says.

Those planning to be outside should:

¢ Avoid prolonged exposure to strenuous physical activity.

¢ Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration.

¢ Wear light-weight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

¢ Wear a hat and use sunscreen.

The weather service said pets can also succumb to the effects of the heat, so they should have adequate drinking water and a shady place to rest. Keeping them in cars with the windows rolled up could subject them to temperatures 150 degrees or more, resulting in stroke or death, the weather service says.

At 7:30 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 81 degrees, the humidity was 81 percent and winds were out of the south at 12 mph.

There will be some relief from 100-degree heat as a cold front moves in from the north and west.

Tonight’s temperature will fall to 77 degrees by early Wednesday morning, Jones said. Wednesday’s high temperature will climb to 95 degrees, she said.

There’s also a chance for showers on Wednesday and Wednesday night, she said.

However, the best chance for showers and thunderstorms are on Thursday, she said.

Thursday’s morning temperature will be 70 degrees. Thurday’s afternoon high will be 87 degrees, she said.
