Salvation Army plans meeting about shelter

The Lawrence Salvation Army is getting more specific about how it will provide services to people at a proposed shelter site in East Lawrence.

Salvation Army leaders will meet with neighbors of the site – which is proposed for just north of 19th Street and Haskell Avenue – at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

At the meeting, the Salvation Army officials will go over eight specific conditions they would agree to as part of a site plan that must be approved by city commissioners before the shelter can be built. Among the conditions:

  • Will never enter into an agreement with the Department of Corrections to provide housing for prisoners or parolees at the site.
  • Will offer transportation to downtown’s Lawrence Community Shelter or to the Lawrence Police Department for any person who is refused service because they are intoxicated.
  • Will offer transportation back to downtown for people who partake in the shelter’s midday meal program.
