Mumps cases increase

As of Friday, Douglas County has 143 confirmed or probable mumps cases, according to the county health department.

On Thursday, the county had reported 135 confirmed or probable cases, including 103 cases involving Kansas University students.

Updated KU and state numbers were unavailable Friday. On Thursday the state had 286 cases and 45 under investigation, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the KDHE announced an extended isolation period – up from four days, to nine days – for patients who had experienced symptoms.

Health professionals suggested that a patient whose isolation period began Friday could return to work or school May 8. The patient would no longer be considered contagious after nine days.
