Awards honor agency, man who helps homeless

A man who helps the homeless and an agency that helps foreign newcomers feel at home are the recipients of the 2006 Tom and Anne Moore Peace and Justice Awards.

Loring Henderson was recognized in his role as director of the Lawrence Community Shelter, which last year merged the operations of Lawrence Open Shelter and the Community Drop-In Center to create one agency offering day and night services to the homeless.

“Small World” has, for nearly four decades, offered English language training and other assistance to thousands of foreign women – mostly the spouses of Kansas University faculty and students – living in Lawrence. The agency is housed at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, but is not religiously affiliated.

The awards were presented by the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice Thursday night in a ceremony at Ecumenical Christian Ministries.
