A former Kansas University chancellor is adding to his leadership responsibilities.

Archie Dykes, who led Kansas University from 1973 to 1980, has joined the board of directors for Arbor Realty Trust Inc., a New York-based real estate investment trust with more than $1 billion in loans and investments.

Among the trust’s recent transactions was providing financing for a conversion of the noted International Toy Center on Fifth Avenue in New York. The building, which is home to an annual international toy show, soon will be redeveloped to include condominiums.

“Archie has a breadth of knowledge gained from serving on various boards over the years and is particularly strong in the area of corporate governance,” said Ivan Kauffman, Arbor’s chairman and chief executive officer and owner of the trust’s external manager, Arbor Commercial Mortgage LLC. “His depth of experience further strengthens our board and we welcome the opportunity to receive his counsel.”

Dykes, 74, is lead director for PepsiAmericas Inc., the world’s second-largest Pepsi bottler with more than $3 billion in annual revenues and 17,000 employees, and is chairman of Capital City Holdings Inc., a venture capital organization he established 18 years ago in Nashville, Tenn.

He also serves as a director for Midas Inc. and Raytech Corp., and is a member of the board of trustees for the KU Endowment Association, the William Allen White Foundation and YouthFriends Inc.

Dykes served as chairman and chief executive officer of Fleming Cos. from March 2003 to September 2004, after serving as the company’s nonexecutive chairman. He had been chairman and chief executive officer of The Security Benefit Group of Companies, based in Topeka, from 1980 to 1987.

He also has served as vice chairman for the Commission on the Operation of the United States Senate, and as a member of the executive committee for the Association of American Universities. Before becoming KU chancellor, Dykes served as chancellor of the University of Tennessee.
