Fire victim grateful for new ride
Mark McAfee is back in business.
The Lawrence handyman lost his minivan Monday when it burned while parked in a lot at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.
Tuesday morning McAfee took possession of another van given to him by Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt.
“It’s in a little better shape than my old one,” McAfee said as he inspected the 1987 Dodge Caravan. “I’m just flabbergasted. All I can say is I had a feeling God would provide for me.”
Two vans recently were donated to Heartland. One was given to a woman who lost her vehicle in the March 12 microburst. The other van, the Dodge given to McAfee, required about $3,000 worth of repairs and parts, said the Rev. Paul Gray, Heartland’s pastor.

A day after his van was destroyed by fire, Mark McAfee, Lawrence, received a new one from Heartland Community Church. McAfee picked up the used Plymouth van Tuesday outside the church, 619 Vt.
The work to repair the van was donated by Auto Exchange of Lawrence, Gray said. By this week the Dodge was ready for a new owner.
Tuesday morning Gray saw the Journal-World photos and story about the fire that consumed McAfee’s minivan, a 1989 Toyota.
“I thought, ‘Well, he needs a van,’ so I called him,” Gray said.
McAfee had just climbed out of bed when Gray called. A few hours later, McAfee went to the church and received the keys.
McAfee thinks God was looking out for him in other ways, too. His tools survived the fire.
“The tool box was burned, but it was strong enough to protect the tools,” he said.
