Gutty Firebird pitchers deliver in Festival finale
Free State’s Robby Price couldn’t help but feel some soreness. And he was the one who hurt the least.
“All three of us were pretty tired,” Price said, “but we dug deep.”
Price, Travis Blankenship and Scott Heitshusen fought fatigue Saturday, each giving all their arms had left in a 10-1 blowout over Warrensburg, Mo., at Hoglund Ballpark.
Though each had pitched earlier in the week, the trio combined to allow just one run and four hits in the seven-inning effort at the River City Baseball Festival.
“Whatever we need to do to get the win for the team,” Price said. “All three of us came out and gave a pretty gutsy effort.”
It started with Blankenship, who started Thursday’s loss against Shawnee Mission North.
Though he was only asked to go two innings, the senior made it into the fourth, allowing just one hit and a single run.
“I was really happy for Travis. He didn’t have his best night Thursday,” Free State coach Mike Hill said. “He’s a competitor, and he came back today and gave us more than we anticipated.”
He was replaced by Price, who started the Lawrence High game Tuesday. The right-hander was impressive in his two innings, retiring four of the six hitters via strikeouts.

Free State High baserunner Hunter Scheib slides underneath the tag of Warrensburg High pitcher Ryan Dawson during the fifth inning to score a run. Saturday afternoon's game was played at Hoglund Park.
Heitshusen, who also pitched in Thursday’s 10-inning marathon, recorded perfect sixth and seventh frames to finish off the Tigers.
Facing Warrensburg ace Ryan Dawson, the Firebirds started the scoring early. Price led off with a single to center, and Travis Ice’s well-executed sacrifice moved him to second.
Brett Lisher lined a single up the middle to make it 1-0. After stealing second, he later scored on Lorenzo Ricketts’ smash through the hole between third and short.
“I’m seeing the ball really well,” Lisher said. “When the rest of the team gets the bats going like they have been, it just kind of gets me excited. It makes me just want to go up there and swing for it.”
Lisher responded again in the fourth, capping a three-run rally with an RBI single to left to make it 6-1.
Warrensburg entered the game with a 13-1 record – with their only loss coming Friday against Shawnee Mission West.
Free State pounded out 10 hits and has scored 23 runs in its last 12 innings.
“We’re a tough team if we can get 10 hits on the board every game,” Price said. “I don’t know many teams that can come out and beat us.”
