Student hit by train; suicide suspected

Baker University senior Jeff Morgan, 23, of Emporia, died Thursday morning after he was struck by a train in Edgerton, and Johnson County Sheriff’s investigators suspect a possible suicide.

Master Deputy Tom Erickson released Morgan’s name and hometown Thursday afternoon.

Officers still were investigating the incident, but Erickson said they believed Morgan stepped in front of the train. His vehicle was found next to the railroad tracks, and it was undamaged. Officers still were trying to discover why Morgan was in the Edgerton area.

Sheriff’s officers responded at 2:18 a.m. to the railroad tracks at 199th Street just south of U.S. Highway 56. They originally were called to investigate someone on the tracks, but they discovered Morgan’s body when they arrived, Erickson said Thursday morning.

The university will have a service at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Osborne Chapel on campus, spokesman Steve Rottinghaus said.

Morgan was well-known in Emporia as a cancer survivor who wrestled for his high school team. He received a college scholarship from the American Cancer Society and played football for Baker.
