Homeless commission frustrated by process

City commissioners said they value the opinions of the newly created Community Commission on Homelessness, even though homeless commission members may not think so.

At a Thursday morning study session, city commissioners agreed to seek more recommendations from the new commission on matters related to homelessness.

Members of the homeless commission expressed frustration that they had not been fully consulted on several issues, including a new ordinance that prohibits camping in the downtown area. They also said they were disappointed that when they made recommendations, such as on the issue of a permit for the Lawrence Open Shelter, that the recommendation wasn’t followed.

City commissioners said they would start asking the homeless commission to review requests from outside agencies seeking funding from the city’s Community Development Block Grant program. CDBG funds often are requested by agencies that serve the homeless. That review process likely will begin for next year’s program, because homeless commission members said they likely did not have time to hear the requests this year.
