Washington President Bush declared a state of disaster Thursday in Douglas and Wyandotte counties, where a storm last month ripped roofs off homes and businesses and damaged buildings at Kansas University.
The disaster declaration makes federal aid available to help the counties recover from the March 12 and 13 severe storms, which produced straight-line winds that reached speeds of 80 mph and damaged about 60 percent of the buildings on the Lawrence campus. Classes were canceled on March 13 because of concerns about falling debris.
The university estimated last month that repairs would cost as much as $7 million.
The storm also left damage across Lawrence, with awnings and roofs destroyed all along Massachusetts Street, the main street through downtown.
In Wyandotte County, winds sucked off part of the roof at the Great Wolf Lodge indoor water resort near the Kansas Speedway, tore roofs off numerous homes and blew windows out of the Indian Springs mall in Kansas City, Kan.

There is no reasons that anyone in Lawrence should be calling for Federal aid.
There was so little damage that this matter should be handled locally.
Applying for Federal assistance only furthers the intrusioin of the Big Government into the private lives of our citizens.
Shame on the City Of Lawrence and shame on the State of Kansas!
Thanks.
Marion.

Wow, I'm happy the City is taking care of its citizens. The government seems to always helping the homeless, jobless and welfare abusing people. Now that the City is taking care of tax paying citizens, it is wrong? Hmmm….
