KU student is D.C.’s Cherry Blossom Queen

Kansas University student Kristina Hilboldt, of Derby, is this year’s Washington, D.C., Cherry Blossom Queen.

Hilboldt, 22, received the honor during a coronation ceremony Friday night.

The Cherry Blossom Queen is part of the city’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival. The winner is selected at random.

Each state selects a Cherry Blossom Princess through its congressional delegation. To win, a giant roulette wheel listing each state and territory is spun. This year, Guam was the runner-up. When the final spin came up on Kansas, Hilboldt became queen.

Hilboldt, a senior majoring in political science with a minor in German, is a 2002 graduate of Derby High School. She receives an expenses-paid trip to Japan for the honor.
