Free State tennis sweeps

The weather has kind to the Free State High tennis team these days.

A blistering south wind has helped Free State to an undefeated week, including a 12-0 performance to sweep a home quad with Seaman, Olathe Northwest and Roeland Park Miege on Tuesday.

“We deal with the windy conditions every day in practice,” coach Jon Renberger said. “We used it to our advantage today. Our guys knew how much harder they had to hit it into the wind and how to let up and use a little more topspin when the wind was at their backs. It’s definitely a home-court advantage.”

No. 1 singles player Keith Pipkin used the wind to his advantage all afternoon. He swept his first match with Seaman’s Tyler Nelson, 8-0, and then swept Olathe Northwest’s Zak Williams, 8-0.

He then beat Miege’s Willy Christie, 8-2, making him 24-2 on the day.

Free State High's Jack Hull, left, returns a volley against Topeka Seaman. Hull and partner Patrick Spurgeon, right, defeated their Seaman counterparts, 8-0, Tuesday at Free State.

“I expected to win the quad,” Pipkin said. “The last person got a couple of games off me. That match was harder than I thought it was going to be. It was a good day.”

The who Free State team had a good day, but the No. 1 doubles team of Jack Hull and Patrick Spurgeon had a particularly good afternoon. The duo won all three of their games, by scores of 8-0, 8-7 (7-4), and 8-5.

The Hull-Spurgeon team improved to 7-0 this season.

Spurgeon also had some difficulty with the wind, calling it a factor in the matches.

“It was all day,” Spurgeon said. “You can put so much power into a shot, but if you’re going against the wind, it seems like it’s going so slow, and it just lands right where your opponent can put a slam on you every time.”

Charlie Moffet, at No. 2 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Stephen Donly and Drew Schelar also went 3-0.

Free State's Patrick Spurgeon returns a backhand during his doubles match. Spurgeon and his partner, Jack Hull, the number one Free State doubles team, defeated a Seabury team 8-0 in a match Tuesday at Free State High School.

LHS goes 0-2-1

Lawrence High lost to Olathe South and Shawnee Mission South and split with Shawnee Mission West during a home quad Tuesday at the Lawrence Tennis Center.

LHS fell to SM South, 4-0, and O-South, 3-1. LHS and SM West tied, 2-all.

“Well, we lost nine varsity matches, just like we did (Monday) at Free State,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said, “but the good news is we won three matches. We played a lot more competitive matches. I think we focused better today, but unforced errors were our demise.”
