Mumps cases on rise

Mumps cases in the Lawrence area have increased, as Kansas University and Douglas County have each reported new cases in the last week.

According to Douglas County figures, 28 new cases, both confirmed and probable, have appeared in the county as of Monday.

KU has also reported increases, with 21 new confirmed or probable cases.

Those figures may overlap somewhat, although some KU students with new mumps cases may not have originated within the county, KU officials said.

Recent information provided by the Kansas Department of Heath and Environment defines the isolation period for mumps as three days prior to any symptoms until four days following. Previously, the department listed the period as nine days following the appearance of symptoms.

The county recommends that any individuals with swelling in the jaw area for two or more days without other apparent cause should see a doctor immediately.
