Observations

To the editor:

A few comments on recent developments in our city:

¢ Kudos to the crews from our local public works and parks and recreation departments for their timely response and hours of hard work cleaning up after the recent storm.

¢ Although many people may approve, I am appalled to think that our streets will be less dangerous if more people are carrying guns (regarding the conceal and carry weapons bill just passed in Topeka).

¢ Again, although many may think them an improvement, I see the addition of not only the expensive roundabouts – some even aesthetically pleasing and working well to slow traffic – but also of numerous “turn lanes” to our city streets as accidents waiting to happen. The latter have become, in some cases, third driving lanes on two-lane streets, an excuse for rudeness by citizens who choose to go around a driver waiting for a light (rather than waiting politely behind) and a danger to drivers coming from opposite directions who end up facing each other in one of these lanes while preparing to turn. It also is now very confusing, trying to decide which is the appropriate lane at an intersection when driving straight across the street.

¢ I am sorry to see Mike Wildgen released as our city manager.

¢ Applause for Richard Heckler’s idea to locate the new library on the vacant lot next to the Lawrence Arts Center. It seems the most logical option for keeping our library downtown. I hope that our city’s administrators will seriously consider it.

M.G. Roy,
