Daylight-saving tip: Change smoke alarms

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical leaders are urging people to change their smoke alarm batteries when they reset their clocks for daylight-saving time, which began at 2 a.m. today.

Rich Barr, the city’s fire marshal, said the most commonly cited cause of nonworking smoke alarms was worn or missing batteries. Barr recommends that people change their smoke alarm batteries at least once per year.

Barr also recommends testing all alarms this weekend, as well as discussing with family members at least two ways out of the home if confronted with a fire.
