Signs not enough

To the editor:

The county commissioners’ suggestion of “signage” as a way to make County Road 1 safe is ludicrous.

Warning signs are Band-Aids, not improvements. We have “driveway ahead” as you approach our home from the north and at one time there were “deer crossing” signs. These signs make no difference to drivers. They do not lessen their speed or make them more cautious.

The deer crossing signs disappeared after about 60 days and have never been replaced. In the last five years, there have been 69 accidents on County Road 1, and over 30 were involving deer. I would not want my child or grandchild driving on County Road 1 or getting on a school bus with the safety precautions the commissioners are proposing.

No sign is going to be sufficient to stop an accident. You are dreaming or wishful thinking. GET REAL! The only way to make it safe for all involved is to do it all the way from Highway 24-40 to Eudora. Do this improvement in both directions of the “exchange,” or don’t do it at all.

Save lives, think about the safety of all the families living in Leavenworth County – not the people who might or might not move to this area.
