— State elected leaders today approved a nearly $10.5 million parking lot at Kansas University.

Meeting as the State Finance Council, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and legislative leaders voted to allow the state to issue the bonds for the project.

The 1,500-space lot will be built on west campus and have shuttle connections to the main campus. It is expected to be completed by next fall.

The bonds will be repaid with student parking fees.

should KU students expect parking fines to rise in the near future?

Yep, like Average said. If they'd integrate the T with KU on Wheels and actually get frequent (at least twice an hour) service to most of the city, maybe they'd reduce the traffic and parking problems. I lived at 23rd & Hartford (next stoplgiht west after Kasold) and for me to take the T to campus would have required spending over an hour on the bus. Not exactly convenient.

They are building this new lot because the Lied Center lot is always full, as is every other parking lot on campus.

Why can't they just continue using the Lied Center parking for shuttle pick-up like they do now? It's a huge parking lot, and it would save 10 1/2 million dolloars!

Yet somehow the Lawrence T remains at half-time (once per hour-and-twenty) on their most used route... the one that serves the biggest employer, destination, and car-restricted part of the city - the KU campus.

West Campus is expanding, and expanding quickly. In order to prevent a shortfall, and match expected growth, I think a new parking lot is a good investment in that corner of campus.

Exactly! I have always wanted to park my SUV on a bamboo parking lot!

Yeah, instead of concerte why don't they make the lot out of bamboo. It's strong AND all-natural!!

I guess these people never think about the effects of run-off. Just pour more concrete!
