Topeka Free State High's volleyball squad had a long day at the Topeka Seaman Invitational, winning three of four three-game matches Saturday before falling to Holton in the championship match.
Holton defeated the Firebirds, 27-25, 25-22, for the title.
"We had a really rough start, but we pulled it together at the end," Free State coach Nancy Hopkins said of the Firebirds' second-place finish.
"It's not all 6A teams. It's a mixture, but they're all pretty good teams."
The Firebirds defeated Shawnee Mission North, 26-24, 21-25, 25-15; lost to Silver Lake, 25-23, 17-25, 25-15; defeated Topeka Hayden, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16; and defeated Santa Fe Trail in the semifinals, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20, before losing to Holton.
For the Firebirds, Kristen Karlin had 29 kills and 11 blocks; Brooke Carter had 23 kills and 21 blocks; and Kelley Jewell had 19 kills and 19 blocks.
Kelsey Harrison, who had 28 kills, and Banaka Okwuone, who had 32 kills, made the all-tournament team.
Free State (10-8) will play in a quadrangular Thursday at Leavenworth.
