Free State 1-2 at quad

? Free State High avenged a loss to Blue Valley West with a 25-18, 25-20 victory Thursday at a quadrangular at Shawnee Mission West.

The Firebirds fell to SM West, 25-20, 25-19, and Olathe South, 25-17, 25-19, before defeating Blue Valley West.

“It was nice to come back and beat a team you probably should have beaten the first time,” Free State coach Nancy Hopkins said.

The Firebirds were led by Kelsey Harrison with six aces, nine kills and seven blocks; Kristen Karlin with nine blocks; and Kelley Jewell with 11 kills and 12 blocks.

“We struggled a little bit with just about everything in the first two matches,” Hopkins said, “but in the last match, we had a little chat, and they pulled everything together.”

The Firebirds (7-6) will compete Saturday at the Topeka Seaman Invitational.
