Comedy show, KPR cut tie

After 20 years, Kansas Public Radio will no longer produce a Lawrence-based comedy radio show that continues to pursue national exposure.

Whether “Right Between the Ears” will be broadcast on KPR’s airwaves in the future remains uncertain.

“We haven’t really made a decision on what we are going to do,” said Janet Campbell, general manager for KPR.

The show’s founder and writer, Darrell Brogdon, remains the program director for KPR. Brogdon created the show in 1993 under the name “The Imagination Workshop.”

The radio show evolved into a comedy sketch show and has gained national prominence. National Public Radio stations have broadcast the show nationally since 1993. SIRIUS Satellite Radio added the show in 2002.

Brogdon said little on Thursday, but he acknowledged that the show’s relationship with KPR was changing. He said that “Right Between the Ears” would move forward with production and that he expected to make an announcement about other possible changes in coming weeks.

The comedy troupe’s 20th anniversary show was broadcast Saturday from the Folly Theatre in Kansas City, Mo., and aired on KPR stations. The anniversary show was the last one that KPR would produce, Campbell said.

“It was too much drain on staff time, and it was time after 20 years for ‘Right Between the Ears’ to fully pursue some national exposure,” Campbell said.

The 90-minute show aired five times per year on KPR, Campbell said. The show pre-empted programming, so nothing new would be needed to fill its time slot, she said.

According to the “Right Between the Ears” Web site, live broadcast shows will be at Liberty Hall on Nov. 26, Jan. 14 and Feb. 4.
