Butterfly film crew stopping in Lawrence

An ultralight plane crew following the migration of monarch butterflies to Mexico from Canada will stop in Lawrence this weekend to conduct interviews for a documentary film.

Weather permitting, Francisco “Vico” Gutierrez, pilot and director of the Papalotzin project, will land with his team about 6 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

Kansas University’s Monarch Watch will host the team in Lawrence on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Papalotzin team members painted their plane to resemble a monarch butterfly. They began their trip Aug. 22 in Montreal.

“They are interested in conservation and the issues involved in saving monarch habitats in both the United States and Mexico,” said Chip Taylor, KU ecology professor and Monarch Watch director.

The public can also meet Papalotzin crew members and view the plane at 10 a.m. Monday at KU’s Foley Hall, 2021 Constant Ave.
