Teaching science

To the editor:

Let it rest? Let what rest, exactly? Should we let integrity in science education rest? Maybe we should let educational standards take a rest?

As a scientist, I am not sure what good intentions have to do with the controversy. One can be honestly wrong. Yes, I agree, there is nothing wrong with a person believing in creation and the presence of God. But, what, pray tell, does this have to do with teaching science in Kansas classrooms? I, for one, embrace the fact that individuals can have different beliefs. Doesn’t every American? What does this have to do with teaching good science in the science classroom?

I have a modest proposal. Let us reject the politics of ignorance represented by the far right on the State Board of Education. Let them take a rest, preferably in Missouri with their attorney.
