LHS grad nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year award

Seattle Pacific University gymnast Corrie McDaniel, a Lawrence native, is the State of Washington’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.

McDaniel, a 2001 Lawrence High graduate, was tapped from among nominees from the 13 NCAA schools in Washington.

A classic literature major, McDaniel has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.74. She finished third on both balance beam and floor exercise at the USA Gymnastics Championships last month, and helped lead SPU to third place.

The NCAA Woman of the Year recognizes females who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. A committee will select 10 finalists from the 51 state winners, based on grade-point average, athletics achievement and community service.

Finalists will be announced later this month. The NCAA Woman of the Year will be revealed during the annual awards dinner Oct. 29 in Indianapolis.
