Helping others

To the editor:

I am writing in response to a Journal-World article published a few days ago regarding the protection of Douglas County residents in the event of a major disaster. The suggestion was made that a dialogue should be taking place now to prepare for such an event. Although we in the Midwest are susceptible to destruction from tornadoes, and it is wise to be informed about and ready to act in such an emergency, I would suggest that we maintain our perspective. Our energy and resources are needed now to help those who have already lost everything.

Very simply, I would like to urge all of those who are concerned about local safety to continue to focus on the needs of those who already are without even basic shelter, have lost loved ones, have such great need for every kind of help.

This is an opportunity for an enormous change of consciousness in our country. To move from self-concern and acquisition of more (and larger) in the way of material assets, to “other concern” and gratitude for that we already have. It is finally time to put aside our biases and prejudices and see ourselves as human beings, all vulnerable, all part of a world community, here to help one another.
