Buck stops here

To the editor:

When Republicans chime in with, “well, you can’t blame Bush for the work of that evil-doer Mother Nature,” it just illustrates how blind to reality they really are.

No, you can’t blame someone for weather – unless you’re the president of the United States and, because of your belief that global warming is liberal myth (actually, a myth is that we all descended from two teenagers living in the woods with a talking snake), our annual tropical storm seasons are becoming more deadly and less predictable.

And you could blame someone whose failure to properly plan (or justify) a foreign war, resulted in the massive, long-term deployment overseas of the very troops and equipment that would ordinarily be ready and waiting to thunder in and save lives – in fact, that may be why we used to refer to them as “The National Guard.”

And you could blame someone for rewarding his CEO cronies, with little to no experience in managing wars or natural disasters, with high-level positions responsible for managing wars and natural disasters.

And you could blame someone who, with his trademark “7-minute” response time, shows up to offer the victims of the ravaged South photo-op platitudes and promises of help in rebuilding tomorrow, when what they all really needed (but were probably too close to death to ask for), was a bottle of water, a sandwich and some antibiotics. Yesterday.

The buck must stop somewhere and simple justice demands that it be at the foot of Dubya’s ivory tower.

Steve Wilson,
