PRAIRIE VILLAGE ? Lawrence High’s gymnastics squad placed first, and Free State High was second Thursday at a four-team meet at Shawnee Mission East.

The Lions scored 103.75 points as a team, and the Firebirds were right behind at 100.9.

“It was a good start to the season,” city coach Kathy Johnson said.

For LHS, Mallory West won the vault, beam and all-around competitions and Kara Kellison won the floor exercise. Free State’s lone winner was Amelia Firns-Hubert on the bars.

The squads will compete at a meet Wednesday at LHS.
