Phelps intolerance

To the editor:

Life in Kansas is pretty darn good. We take pride in our community and state and work hard to showcase it to the rest of the nation. Today, we are not the only state encountering conservative religious ideals in our school board’s agenda, yet Kansas comes off looking “less than progressive.”

But what has to be the worst reflection on this state and Midwest region is Fred Phelps and family. His Church of Intolerance and Hate. Bad enough Kansas has to endure his antics, but for him to travel at large to export his sickness is an affront to every caring and loving person. He is a true aberration, and, I believe, one that needs to be legally dealt with.

During the Vietnam War protesters were prosecuted for “crossing states lines to incite a riot.” Is not Fred Phelps guilty of doing exactly that? Is there any doubt that his children and grandchildren are being poisoned by his vitriolic drivel, yet he remains untouched by all? I wish every true church would stand up and be counted, every citizen to join hands against him. So is it possible to create a legal fund and employ a good attorney to challenge his rights and bolster ours? Undoubtedly, ignoring this pestilence has not worked, and allowing it to spread is dangerous. Shame on us for doing so little.
