Negotiations between LEA, district stall

Officials representing the Lawrence school district say they won’t budge on their offer of a $2,600 across-the-board increase to teacher salaries.

Negotiations between the district and the Lawrence Education Assn. stalled again Wednesday night.

LEA officials proposed increasing the flat rate to $3,100, an amount the opposing side says the district simply can’t afford.

“The school board has given us authorization to spend $2.6 million on salaries,” said Mary Rodriguez, the district’s lead negotiator. “We wanted to put all the cards on the table rather than move incrementally. We wanted to just offer the whole package, and we did.”

Officials with LEA asked district officials to go back to the school board and ask for authorization to spend more money on salaries, a request balked at by at least one district official.

“I think there are some (teachers) who would rather get this over with and move on,” said Kelly Barker, a teacher and LEA member. “I think you also see a lot of people who fully believe that there’s more money available, and there’s more money that should be put into teacher salaries. That’s what we’re advocating for.”

The negotiations committee will meet again on Sept. 21 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at school district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.
