Shared values

To the editor:

I am writing to applaud the Lawrence area lawmakers given failing marks by the Kansas Taxpayers Network as reported in the Sept. 1 Journal-World. We are fortunate to have six brave men and women representing both parties (Reps. Barbara Ballard, Paul Davis, Tom Holland and Tom Sloan and Sens. Marci Francisco and Roger Pine) who, especially compared with many peers across the state, understand that their role in a representative democracy is to represent their constituents.

Many years ago, I learned in civics class that one of the primary functions of government is to determine who will get the valued things of a society. I interpret these “valued things” to include good schools and adequate social services and I appreciate elected representatives who share these values.
