City takes 1st step to adopt family

City leaders said Friday that they have made contact with a family that may temporarily move to the city as part of a program to adopt a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

City Manager Mike Wildgen said a relief agency had located a family that had some Kansas University ties, but family members still had to decide if they wanted to relocate this far from the Gulf Coast area. A family could be in the Lawrence area in the next few days, city officials said.

City leaders have set up a fund for Lawrence residents interested in helping with the effort.

Donations can be sent to the Douglas County Community Foundation at 900 Mass., Suite 406, Lawrence 66044. Checks should be made payable to the foundation, and all donations should note that they are for the Katrina Displaced Family.

People wanting to make in-kind donations should contact the Ballard Community Center at 842-0729.
