School administrators get raises of at least 5 percent

Superintendent's contract still under negotiation

All Lawrence public schools administrators received a raise of at least 5 percent for the 2005-06 school year, district officials announced Thursday.

There was one exception to that rule, however: Supt. Randy Weseman.

The school board has yet to negotiate Weseman’s contract. The discussion was delayed earlier this summer because the board waited to hear final word on the state finance plan.

“We’re working on that,” board member Sue Morgan said. “It’ll probably be the last meeting in September or first meeting in October.”

The district on Thursday released salaries for its 60 administrative staff members.

The majority received about 5.5 percent raises, increasing the number of administrators who take home more than $80,000 from 11 to 19.

School board President Leonard Ortiz said the superintendent has consolidated administrative positions in recent years and given additional duties to top administrators.

“Everybody deserves a raise in the district,” Ortiz said. “They’re all hard workers.”

Top earners are Weseman, who earns $132,483, new Deputy Superintendent Bruce Passman, who earns $104,800, and Free State High Principal Joe Snyder, whose salary is $100,756.

Those who saw the greatest percentage increase from last year were Free State High Assistant Principal Mike Hill, whose pay rose by about 111 percent, Passman who saw a 12 percent raise, and Lawrence Virtual School Principal Gary Lewis whose pay rose about 12 percent.

Hill’s position moved from part-time to full-time. Passman was promoted from executive director for student services, and that position was eliminated. The Virtual School expanded to include offerings for high school students this year, and increased responsibilities were behind Lewis’ raise, Weseman said.
