Free State team, Pogge qualify for state gymnastics

— The Free State High gymnastics team qualified for a return trip to state Saturday, courtesy of a second-place team finish at the Newton Regional.

Perry-Lecompton junior Jennifer Pogge - competing for the Kaws after spending the regular season with Free State - also qualified with a second-place finish in the all-around.

The Firebirds scored 101.875 points, taking runner-up

honors behind Hutchinson (104.525). Amelia Firns-Hubert turned in the strongest all-around performance for Free State, finishing fourth with 34.55 points on the strength of a second-place finish on the bars (8.85) and a third-place showing on the beam (8.60).

Pogge tied for first on the beam (9.2) and took third in the bars (8.80) on her way to an all-around score of 35.225.

The state gymnastics meet will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Free State.
