Coach Fam to talk Mizzou during walk

A two-time former Kansas University football coach who dislikes all things Missouri will hit the streets this evening in downtown Lawrence, and the public is invited along for the stroll.

Don Fambrough, known for years simply as Coach Fam, is scheduled to lead tonight’s “Walktober” event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. outside the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass.

The event is designed to promote personal and business well-being in the downtown district. It is sponsored by Downtown Lawrence Inc., Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Community Health Improvement Project.

Fambrough’s participation comes as Lawrence braces for the arrival of the Missouri Tigers, set to take on KU this Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Fambrough, as a coach, used to remind his players during Missouri week about Quantrill’s Raid, a surprise attack in 1863 by pro-slavery Missourians that burned much of Lawrence and left 150 people dead. Fambrough long has contended that “Billy Quantrill” was a Missouri grad.

“We should have some interesting talk about the upcoming KU vs. Missouri football game,” said Maria Martin, DLI director.
