Creation account
To the editor:
Just a point concerning Jerry Lyons’ letter in Sunday’s Public Forum (“Many possibilities”): I applaud his belief in God and his willingness to read the Bible. However, he mentions a common misunderstanding of the creation account in Genesis chapters 1 and 2, that of assuming they are strictly chronological and thus contradictory. They are not.
Chapter 1 is merely a brief overview of creation, listing the things accomplished on each of the “days,” not 24-hour days, but creative periods of unknown duration. Chapter 2 then focuses on the creation of humans, giving details on the method of creation and the preparation of the earth for human habitation.
